Sheet stock formats & ordering

Stock examples recovered from the earlier sheet-material notes, arranged for purchasing and CAD planning. These are catalogue examples, not guaranteed availability or universal standard dimensions.

Worked example: estimate an order's mass

Assume ten rectangular, unperforated carbon-steel sheets, each 2 mm thick × 1000 mm wide × 2000 mm long. Use an approximate steel density of 7850 kg/m³. This is a planning estimate from nominal dimensions, not a measured delivery mass.

Convert every dimension to metres before multiplying
QuantityInputSI value
Thickness t2 mm0.002 m
Width W1000 mm1 m
Length L2000 mm2 m

Volume: V = L × W × t = 2 × 1 × 0.002 = 0.004 m³.

Mass per sheet: m = ρ × V = 7850 kg/m³ × 0.004 m³ = 31.4 kg.

Ten sheets: 10 × 31.4 kg = 314 kg. Cross-check: 15.7 kg/m² × 2 m² = 31.4 kg per sheet.

Turn the estimate into a usable quotation request

State the dimension order explicitly: “10 sheets; thickness 2 mm × width 1000 mm × length 2000 mm; estimated net steel mass 314 kg.” This line is incomplete until the grade, delivery condition, tolerances, finish and certificate requirements below are agreed. Ask whether pricing uses nominal mass, measured mass or a price per sheet.

Before ordering, check the usable area against the cutting layout. Sheet area alone cannot determine the number of parts: edge trim, cutting gaps, grain direction and machine limits can prevent a layout from fitting.

Technical reference

SSAB: Metal-coated sheets — environmental product declaration (PDF) gives 7850 kg/m³ for steel density. Used here only as a reference density for the steel substrate; coating mass is not included. The calculation and ordering example are original educational examples. The stock table above retains legacy catalogue examples; confirm availability with the supplier.
