Milling: identify edge damage before adjusting

After checking chip evacuation, inspect the cutting edge under safe conditions. Different damage mechanisms can require different responses.

PatternReview first
Flank wearCutting speed and grade wear resistance.
ChippingEdge toughness, geometry and possible built-up edge.
Built-up edgeAdhesive work material, cutting temperature and geometry; simply slowing down may be inappropriate.
ORIGINAL INSPECTION RECORD

Separate observation from explanation

Record “small pieces missing from edge” as an observation; “grade too brittle” remains a hypothesis. Photograph the edge, identify the insert and work material, and retain cutting data. Confirm the pattern with supplier guidance before a controlled change.
