Drawings & tolerances

ISO limits, fits and drawing decisions

A compact design reference for choosing and communicating dimensional tolerances in real machine assemblies. Use the separate terminology glossary for English–German equivalents.

FUNDAMENTALS

Nominal size, deviations and tolerance

The nominal size is the reference dimension. Upper and lower deviations define the permitted limits; the tolerance is their difference.

  • Hole: ES, EI, TH
  • Shaft: es, ei, TS
  • Fit: planned relationship between hole and shaft
DESIGN EXAMPLE

Ø50 hole with +0.30 / +0.10 mm

Maximum hole size: 50.30 mm. Minimum hole size: 50.10 mm.

TH = ES − EI = 0.30 − 0.10 = 0.20 mm

Carry this value into inspection planning and assembly clearance checks.

Fit type Design intent Typical decision
Clearance fit Always positive clearance Guided sliding, serviceable assemblies
Transition fit Clearance or light interference Accurate location
Interference fit Press or shrink assembly Permanent hubs and bushes
